Review + swatches: Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm

Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm review and swatches

My cream blush streak continues with Clinique’s new Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balms. With the Chubby Stick family now extended to include eyeshadows, lipsticks, lip crayons, and sheer tints, I knew it was just a matter of time when Clinique would introduce cheek blushers into the mix. New for fall 2014, the Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm is available in four shades, and I have two to share with you today – Robust Rhubarb and Roly Poly Rosy.

In general, these Chubby Stick Cheek Colours are relatively dry and waxier compared to the typical cream blush. It is less creamy, more waxy in texture. These don’t dry down as quickly as other cream blushes, and the good thing is, if you do make a mistake, these don’t stain your cheeks like other cream blushers would. You can easily wipe this off or blend it further to your heart’s content. The applicator makes it super easy to apply, just dab on your cheeks and blend out.

Robust Rhubarb is a sheer coral pink shade. I wasn’t too impressed with this shade because it really required you to build up the colour a LOT before it would look like anything on the cheeks. It was really easy to blend out and is foolproof because it is so sheer – anyone can use it without the risk of overdoing.

Roly Poly Rosy (I know, who comes up with these names?!) is a beautiful rose-red shade; it fits perfectly with my current obsession of red blushes. Roly Poly Rosy is much more opaque and delivers a more pigmented wash of colour with each swipe. It is still super easy to blend out, and still pretty much foolproof, but just less effort required. I use 2 dabs per cheek and it is enough to give me a nice flush of colour.

In terms of lasting power though, I found that these don’t actually last super long, which is a disappointment. I put this on in the morning and usually by early afternoon, the blush has mostly disappeared. In comparison with the Chubby Stick eyeshadows that last all day and night, the blushes weren’t so impressive.

All in all though, I would still buy more of these if more colours came out. I love how versatile and easy to apply these are, and the stick applicator makes it travel friendly as well – no need to bring brushes or sponges, and you don’t have to worry about them staining your fingers. If you are looking for a long-lasting blush though, these probably aren’t for you.
