If you’ve been following me on my Instagram lately, you’ll notice that I recently dyed my hair red. Because of that, I’ve been looking into colour-protecting shampoo and conditioners to maintain and upkeep the vibrant red hair. Because red dye molecules are the biggest out of all the dye molecules, they also strip away faster from the hair follicle, leaving hair looking dull and coppery after just a few washes. I’ve been fortunate enough to be saved at this moment by John Frieda, who has designed shampoo, conditioner, and a colour refreshing gloss specifically for us faux red heads.
The Radiant Red shampoo, designed specifically for redheads, is gentle and great for regular use. It lathers up really well and a little bit goes a long way. I feel like it’s quite gentle on my hair, leaving it feeling clean but never dry or stripped. This is great because you want to avoid the extra clean feel when you have colour-treated hair due to it actually stripping the colour out of your follicle. One thing to note is that it’s not sulfate-free, which can be a concern if you are avoiding sulfates.
The Radiant Red conditioner is one of the coolest conditioners I’ve used because it’s actually tinted red. I’ve heard via several sources that with faux redheads, you want to buy a tinted red conditioner because it helps to deposit some tint back to the hair. It’s been approximately 6 weeks since I’ve gotten my hair coloured and each time I wash my hair, there’s still dye that washes out, so I love that this conditioner will help to replenish some of that colour back. It’s also ultra gentle, but moisturizing enough so that my hair stays soft and smooth after each wash.
This is my favourite product of the bunch and something I recommend EVERYONE with coloured hair have in their shower (they have a version for nearly every hair colour family). The Colour Refreshing Gloss is essentially a tinted gel that you apply to your hair after shampooing and conditioning to help refresh your colour. I’ve noticed that my hair has definitely turned a bit coppery and dull after a few washes and the Colour Refreshing Gloss has helped tremendously to bring warmth back to my hair. After a few uses of this, I’ve actually had a few coworkers ask me if I had gotten my hair re-done at the salon since the last time I saw this, which I think is pretty amazing for an at-home hair product that costs less than $10.
I’m really impressed with John Frieda’s line for coloured hair. As maintaining coloured hair is one of the hardest parts (and can be the most expensive part) of dying your hair, I’m happy to report that John Frieda has not only made it super easy and convenient, but also inexpensive. John Frieda also has a line for blonds and a line for brunettes, if you are part of one of those hair colour families, so check it out at your local London Drugs, Shoppers Drug Mart, and anywhere else that sells John Frieda.
