The Face Shop is one of the most prominent Korean skincare brands available in Canada, available at over 30 retail outlets across the country. Did you know that The Face Shop introduces approximately 30 new products each month, either to replace older formulas or as completely new innovations? For March, The Face Shop is releasing a new range of skincare – the Capsule Cream.
The Capsule Creams are one of the coolest new skincare innovations I’ve seen in a very long time. The gist is that you have skincare active ingredients encapsulated in a pearl, suspended in a clear gel. You take 3-4 pearls for your face if you’re using it as your moisturizer, or just 1-2 pearls to mix with your existing moisturizer to create a luminous finish. Simply crush the pearls in your palms and then apply on your skin. Because the active ingredients are encapsulated, they won’t lose efficacy or oxidize once exposed to oxygen, and will be more effective over an extended period of time.
My first impression was that this cream is extremely luxurious. The packaging is similar to something that is priced at 2-3x the price of this cream. The jar is heavyweight, and comes with a convenient plastic spatula for scooping out pearls. It comes in a very nice paper box, with a plastic tray to keep neatly house the cream with the plastic spatula. I plan on keeping the jar after finishing up the cream – it makes for a great jewelry or trinket organizer!
The Face Shop White Ginseng Collagen Pearl Capsule Cream (C$75) is a hydrating formula that contains real pearl powder to brighten the skin and lighten blemish scars. The pearl ingredients also help to calm, nourish, and smooth the skin. The texture is a lightweight gel-cream that’s packs a punch, heightening the hydrating properties of any cream I’m using without weighting my skin down. It’s not the most moisturizing on its own, so I prefer using this either layered on top of another moisturizer, or mixed with my current cream. If you have normal or combination skin, though, this would be perfect for you if you’re looking for a lightweight, perfecting moisturizer.
I was really looking forward to this version because I’ve heard a lot about the benefits of pearl powder growing up (hello Chinese heritage!), but this cream is extremely glittery that leaves it almost unusable on its own. Even when mixed into my other moisturizers, I still get a lot of shimmery bits on my face that doesn’t dissipate (it’s unlike the products in the Hwansaenggo Escargot Gold Firming Line that contain gold but dissolves once applied on the face). What I do like using this for is underneath my foundation to create a more glowy complexion.
The Face Shop Nokyong Collagen Contour Lift Gold Capsule Cream (C$75) is an anti-aging formula that specializes in lifting the different parts of the face that shows aging the fastest – forehead, between the eyes, eye area, laugh lines, lips, neck, and facial contour. It contains Nokyong collagen and golden silk derived from silkworms to treat and care for lines and wrinkles.
Of the two Capsule Creams, I prefer this one. It is significantly less glittery than the other cream, and I find that I can use this on its own without a foundation on top to mask the shimmer. It’s also slightly more moisturizing than the White Ginseng Collagen Pearl, so I can use this on its own or with a hydrating serum. In terms of lifting effect, I’m not really in need to an anti-aging product but I like using them for insurance, so I can’t really say how much this helps to reverse signs of aging. I’ve also enjoyed using this mixed into my foundation.
All in all, I think everyone should go to a The Face Shop store and check these out in person. Just the cool texture is enough for me to recommend that you at least take a look at these. They’re such a versatile product – you can use them as a moisturizer, mixed with your moisturizer to boost the hydration, as a primer to help increase the glow, or even mixed in with your foundation for even more glow. For $75 it is pricey, but because you can use these in so many different ways, it’s pretty good value. Of the two, I would recommend going with the Nokyong Collagen Contour Lift Gold Capsule Cream, but if you don’t mind the shimmery bits in the White Ginseng Collagen Pearl, they’re both pretty good contenders as skincare supplements!
