Review + swatches – Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor review and swatch

Liquid lipsticks were the rage in 2015 and they will continue to be a popular product category for 2016. Specifically, matte liquid lipsticks have made their way across almost all brands, even the high end ones such as Guerlain have created their own versions of the matte, creamy liquid lip. For the budget shoppers, Revlon in 2015 has introduced their line of liquid lipsticks as part of their Ultra HD line.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor (C$11.49) is available in eight mostly bold shades. Revlon claims that its 100% wax-free, gel formula gives you lighweight, high definition matte colour in just one coat. The three shades I received were Addiction, a mauve plum; Obsession, a bold warm fuchsia; and Devotion, a peachy nude. Of the three shades, I’m most in love with Addiction for being that perfect wearable plum, as well as Devotion for being the most wearable on a daily basis.

I was surprised to find that the textures between these three shades really varied – Addition was the thinnest and most liquid, Obsession was the most viscous and stickiest, and Devotion was the creamiest with a mousse texture. Devotion was also the truest matte, as the other two had a creamy finish that didn’t dry satin or matte. Because of the non-matte nature, I found the lipsticks to be slightly tacky and heavy, which is something that I try to avoid now, especially with all the lightweight lipstick technologies on the market. Despite this, the lasting power is great as it wore through a meal, leaving a minor stain behind.

In comparison to one of my favourite Revlon lip products, the Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain, I would prefer the Colorstay Moisture Stain. They have more of a gel finish (compared to the Ultra HD Mattes that have a cream finish) that you can blot off to get a true, lightweight stain.

Overall I’m on the fence about these. They’re not true matte lipsticks, which lies the first and biggest problem, and are also not lightweight like I generally prefer my lipsticks. If you aren’t expecting a matte lipstick, and just a creamy liquid lipstick then you might like these. Otherwise I suggest looking elsewhere for true mattes!
