Cellnique skincare reviews: Derma Whitening Essence, Cream and Daytime Protection 50

Cellnique Derma Whitening Essence and Cream review

Cellnique is one of my favourite skincare brands of all time. I’ve used several of their products and I’ve always had excellent results. If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, you can read up about it on a brand overview I wrote a few years ago, and you can also see my other Cellnique reviews here.

Cellnique Derma Whitening Essence review

Cellnique Derma Whitening Essence

The Whitening Essence (US$87 for 30mL) contains Idebenone, which helps to  improve photo-damaged skin; and Licorice Extract, which treats hyper-pigmentation. The serum itself is a bright yellow colour and has a bit of a chemical scent that’s quite strong, but you get used to it quickly. It has a light creamy texture that spreads easily onto the skin and absorbs quickly, leaving no residue. One of my favourite things about Cellnique is how refined the skincare products feel, and the Essence definitely has that same quality in terms of how smooth, silky, and lightweight it feels, despite it being a cream texture. For a brightening product, it is also very hydrating in that this essence with the cream is enough moisture to last throughout the night, and I wake up with extremely silky, soft, hydrated, and plump skin.

In terms of the whitening effects when used in conjunction with the Whitening Cream, I found that it’s not great at lightening my existing scars or brightening my skin (i.e. improving radiance). However, I found it to be amazing at lightening my skin tone, especially after day out in the sun when I experienced a bit of a tan. For post-tan repair, the effects are extremely quick, in that after 1-2 nights, my tan has gone away and I’m back to my normal skin tone. I’ve been using this product for about a month and I actually found that I need to use about half a shade lighter in my foundation compared to before.

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua Purificata), Idebenone (Hydroxydecyl Ubiquinone), PEF-100 Stearate & Glyceryl Stearate, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Ethylhexagonate, Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Punica Granatum Seed Oil, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Saccharide Isomerate, Jojoba Oil, Tocotrienol (Vitamin E), Dimethicone, Salicylic Acid, Allantoin, Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) Extract, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Beta-Sitosterol, Hydrogenated Phosphatidylcholine, Caprylyl Glycol, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

Cellnique Derma Whitening Cream review

Cellnique Derma Whitening Cream

The Whitening Cream (US$94 for 30mL) contains Ubiquinone Q10; Alpha Arbutin to whiten the skin, prevent liver spots and freckles; and Vitamin A Palmitate to improve acne, photodamage and post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. It has that same refined, ultra smooth, ultra lightweight texture that is in all Cellnique cream products I’ve tried. It absorbs quickly, and when used with the Essence, provides enough hydration to leave my skin looking and feeling smooth and plump in the morning.

I used this in conjunction with the Essence, so my conclusion with regards to the whitening effects is the same as above. The one thing I want to add about the Whitening Cream is that over time, it left my skin looking smooth, with tightened and more refined pores and skin texture than before. This cream never leaves my skin feeling greasy or heavy

The major downside is the price for the size. It’s only a 30ml jar, which is 40% smaller than most facial creams out there, and it’s priced at US$94 for 30mL, which translates to about US$156 for a 50mL jar. I’ve also been running through the product extremely quickly because I love how lightweight and smooth the cream is, so I use more than I really should.

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) Leaf Extract, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Placenta Extract, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone, Steareth-20, Dipeptide-2, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Carbomer, Polysorbate 20, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Meadowfoam ( Limnanthes alba) Seed oil, Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate, Cetearyl Glucoside, Pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis) Seed Oil, Behenyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Ubiquinone Q10, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG100 Stearate, Arbutin, Vitamin A Palmitate, Ceramide III, Titanium Dioxide, Dimethicone, Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate), α-BISABOLOL, Sodium Hyaluronate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate, Allantoin, Fragrance, Methylisothiazolinone, Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate

Cellnique Derma Whitening Daytime Protection 50 review

Cellnique Derma Whitening Daytime Protection 50

The Daytime Protection 50 (US$71 for 30mL) has an SPF factor of 50 and PA+++ for both UVA and UVB protection. In terms of sunscreen protection, it contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as the physical blockers, but there’s no indication of the dose of these ingredients so I can’t say for sure how high the SPF protection is. It contains Bearberry Leaf to fade dark spots and act as an antioxidant against free radicals; Alpha Arbutin to whiten the skin, prevent liver spots and freckles; and Licorice to treat hyper-pigmentation. It has a lightweight, dry-cream type of texture. For SPF 50, it’s not greasy or heavy at all, and absorbs into my skin quickly. It also acts as a primer for my foundation, and creates a smooth base for foundation to glide on top of. For a sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide, it doesn’t leave a white cast on the skin at all. I used this throughout summer and didn’t get sun burnt or red on my face, even though I didn’t reapply during the day (oops).

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Cyclomethicone, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone Copolyol, Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) Extract, Bis-Hydroxyethoxypropyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone Copolyol, Polysilicone 15, Silica, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Acrylates/Polytrimethylsiloxymethacrylate Copolymer, Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate), Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate), Methicone, Sodium Chloride, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Alpha-Arbutin, Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)Extract, Propylparaben

In conclusion, I definitely recommend looking into these products if you’re less budget conscious when it comes to skincare. The Essence and Cream are great options for those looking for brightening/whitening products, and they do really work. The Daytime Protection 50 has a lovely texture but it’s quite expensive for a sunscreen so if you already have a sunscreen you enjoy using, you can probably skip this.
