Review: Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Skin Clay Mask

One of my most anticipated products in the Charlotte Tilbury range was this Goddess Skin Clay Mask. It’s a clay-based mask that also contains sweet almond oil (4th ingredient) to hydrate the skin.

My skin profile: I have very dehydrated cheeks with a t-zone that gets oily. I occasionally get break-outs, usually 1-2 around that time of the month. My main skin concerns are hyper-pigmentation and dehydration in the cheek area and fine lines in the eye area. My ideal skincare products are ones that provide good moisture to my skin, absorb quickly and leave no left-over product sitting on top of my skin.

What it claims (from CharlotteTilbury.com): Forget everything you think you know about clay masks. My fabulous new formula will leave you moisturized, dewy and glowing whilst also tightening your pores and clearing imperfections. Texture/Scent: Light creamy clay texture with a very strong jasmine scent

How to use: Apply this mask all over the skin after cleansing, wait ten minutes, and off using warm water or a muslin cloth.

The good: The first thing I noticed about the Goddess Skin Clay Mask was how incredibly amazing it smelled. The strong jasmine scent was extremely relaxing and felt super luxurious. As a clay mask, I didn’t feel like it dried out my skin at all, rather the sweet almond oil kept my skin feeling soft and supple, and also prevented the clay from drying out too much. After washing this off, my skin looked smoother, albeit a tiny bit dry from the clay but not too dry, and provided a good surface for moisturizer and makeup application.

The bad: I didn’t notice any long term effects from the mask at all. My skin looked good after each application – sadly not amazing, just relatively good, but it basically stayed like that and didn’t get any better with multiple uses. I tried to use this twice a week where possible, and even after a few weeks, my skin didn’t improve in texture by much. The packaging, while very pretty, feels almost cheap to me, especially for a $80 luxury product.

Overall: Not sure if I just hyped it up a lot for myself, but I found this mask overall to be a disappointment. I feel like a lot of Charlotte’s products, especially her skincare, are good for instant brightening, or instant perfecting, but in the long run they don’t improve the situation of the skin. I wasn’t too surprised by this because her products were developed to use by her on celebrities and models for red carpet and fashion week where they don’t have weeks and weeks to prep, and are more in need of instant fixes. These products are definitely more instant fixes than long term improvements, which could be good and bad, depending on what you’re looking for. One thing is for sure though, I will definitely be using this (with Charlotte’s Magic Cream) before applying makeup for a special event or a night out. I might just save it for the special occasions and not use it regularly though.
