FAQ

Who is behind Maddy Loves?

Me! I’m Sheila, living in the beautiful city of Vancouver. I’ve been blogging since I was 13, and I am pretty addicted to it. I try to blog at least two to three times a week, but if you want to read more about me, you can always find me on Twitter, posting random updates throughout the day.

When and why did you start Maddy Loves?

I started this blog in November of 2008 (we used to be known as Mademoiselle Loves Beauty, but that was too long of a name) because I am a big fan of everything beauty-related, and because I’ve been using skincare and makeup for many years, I’ve accumulated some knowledge about the products. I want to share that knowledge with people around me, so I started this blog.

Where do you get the products you review?

I buy most of the products I review. If I didn’t buy it, I will specify in the review itself if it was a sample I received from buying something else, or sent by a PR company for consideration.

How do you decide which products to review?

I only review products that I have used, and in the case of skincare products, used at least for a few weeks depending on what kind of product it is (eg. moisturizer – longer, cleanser – shorter). Frequently these are products I feel that the world would want to know about, for example I am not going to review something that is completely obsolete and you can’t get your hands on because what would be the point? My purpose is to give people an idea of what is good and what to look out for in the endless world of beauty products. However, some products that have worked for me may not work for you, so please exercise discretion when reading these reviews.

Do you have a specific format when doing a review?

Yes I do! I try to cover both the good and bad sides of the product depending on how it turned out for me. A typical format would include what the advertisements claim, the price, instructions and/or ingredients, pros and cons of the product, and overall feeling, recommendation and then ratings. My rating categories include the product itself – how well does it perform based on what it claims and on its own; the value – how much product you’re getting for the price you pay; packaging – the overall visual aspect; as well as ease of use. I then finish off with an overall rating that incorporates all of the individual category ratings and then whether or not I would repurchase the product.

A typical review would look like this:

  • Product background
  • What it claims
  • Price
  • Ingredients and/or instructions
  • The good
  • The bad
  • Overall
  • Ratings

Why don’t you post up FOTDs (Face of the Days) as often as other bloggers?

I like to play it safe when I’m wearing makeup, which means most of the looks I do are similar in colour or applied in a similar fashion. If you would like to request a look though (eg. for a special occasion or using specific colours), please feel free to contact me, I will do the best to satisfy your request.

Why do you spell “colour” with a “u”?

I’m Canadian, that’s the Canadian way to spell it.

Will you do a positive review for my product if I send it to you for free?

No. I do not do sponsored posts as I feel that threatens the integrity of my blog posts.  However, I will do an unbiased review of your product if you decide to send me something. That is usually done after I’ve tried the product and I treat it like any other product I purchase for myself.

How do I contact you if I want you to review my product?

You can e-mail me directly at maddylovesblog[at]gmail[dot]com or use this form here. If you’re a reader and you want me to review a specific product or recommend a type of product, you can also contact me using that form above.

I think you’re nice, can I ask you out?

Er…. sure..? Use this form here.

I don’t think I like you very much, what do I do?

Um.. you can either close this window and go do something else, or you can contact me.

Got any more questions? Ask them here.
