I was introduced to the Young Victoria movie by my roommate who loves period pieces like me. Even though I had been looking forward to this movie since last year, it never got released into Canada as it was a limited release movie. I kind of gave up about it until my roommate watched it a few days ago. I watched it and I am hooked.
The plot is extremely simple and there is no real storyline. Its basically about the life of Queen Victoria just before, and after her coronation as Queen, as well as her relationship with Prince Albert.
I think one of the reasons that I am so attached to this movie (and by attached, I mean attached, I’ve been watching this movie 2-3 times a day for the past maybe 4-5 days, lol), is the chemistry between Emily Blunt, who plays Victoria, and Rupert Friend, who plays Albert. They play the cutest couple and the love between them seems almost fairytale-like, although very real as from history’s point of view, they really were that in love.
The music in this movie is pretty awesome. It really brings out your emotions and no matter how many times I’ve seen this, I still feel that tingle in my spine during the coronation scene, and near then end when some sad things take place. If you are a good music lover, you should also watch this. A recurring theme in the music is songs by Schubert, whom Albert is supposedly a fan of.
Rupert’s Albert is like the perfect guy, so dreamlike, and just so wonderful. Its pretty depressing at the same time between I know I’ll probably never meet a guy like that, if one even exists. Chivalry is pretty dead, sadly.
Anyways, I strongly recommend this movie to anyone who likes period pieces, historical movies or romances. This is definitely on the top of my favourite movies list, together with the Duchess (Keira Knightley as Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire) and The Other Boleyn Girl (Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn).
Did I mention Rupert Friend is HOT? Yes, he is. And I love Emily Blunt too, her characters are always so well played.
