Review/Swatches: Lush Lip Tint in Celebrate, Snow Fairy and Chilli Tingle

Posted by Sheila on December 7, 2011

Lush released a couple of Limited Edition Lip Tints for Holiday in Celebrate, Snow Fairy and Chilli Tingle.

  • Celebrate is an opaque, light blue-based pink with lots of champagne shimmer. It smells very sweet, like candy.
  • Snow Fairy is a light sheer pink that is very “my lips but better” on me. This smells like cotton candy, like usual with Lush Snow Fairy.
  • Chilli Tingle is a sheer orange-red tint and it smells like chocolate.

Celebrate was very densely packed with the champagne shimmer, to the point that it looks like I foiled my lips. The shimmer would migrate to my lip lines, which didn’t help my lips look less dry. There are little bits of candy (I think it’s candy) sitting on top of the pot that I would recommend you dump out before you use this, otherwise you’re going to be left with bits of candy stuck to your lips. I would probably skip this one.

I found Snow Fairy to be the most moisturizing out of the three. It is very sheer, but it still helps to even out my lip colour to create a very healthy look. I can see myself wearing this out during the day for a bit of colour for my face. In general, I like!

Chilli Tingle smells very delicious and perfect for the holiday season. It is an orange-red tint that stains my lips for long-lasting colour. The one I received was particularly hard and had to be warmed up in my fingers for a while before I could get some colour out of it. I found this one to be less moisturizing than Snow Fairy, but more moisturizing then Celebrate. It applied a little unevenly so gloss can help even out the colour a little.

These are the first lip tints I’ve tried from Lush and I am a little bit on the fence about the formula. I think Snow Fairy is great but Celebrate and Chilli Tingle could have been a little better. In the case of Chilli Tingle, it could have been the original formulation or just that batch that didn’t go so well. If you happen to have your eyes on these, I would recommend popping in store to check them out in person just to test and swatch it out for yourself before you decide to purchase or not.

Review: L’Occitane en Provence Ultra Rich Shea Butter Lip Balm

Posted by Sheila on February 22, 2010

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I am on the constant look-out for the perfect lip balm. I always get so close to finding the one, but because of one reason or another, it doesn’t end up happening. Well, I just recently came back from Paris with the Ultra Rich Lip Balm from L’Occitane and I must tell you that this comes pretty close (again).

This is just a very plain lip balm with no additional promises, except of course for moisturized lips, and I’ve found that it really does what it claims. It is not scented, and applies very easily and smoothly. Unlike other stick lip balms that I’ve used, this one doesn’t seem to stretch out my lips or accentuates my lines at all. In other words, it works very very well.

I got this in France for 6 Euros, which translates roughly into $9CAD, but it is currently selling in Canada for $12 and in UK for £6.50, which means the cheapest place to get it is in France. Too bad I won’t be going back there… I’m thinking of getting a few more for backup. Hopefully its priced the same in Barcelona and so I can pick it up from there when I go to Spain in 2 weeks.

My score?  ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

P.S. My complete haul video is coming up later today. I bought a ton of stuff (ie. spent a ton of money) from my 10-day trip but I don’t want to take pictures of everything… so you get a video!

Review: Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm

Posted by Sheila on January 5, 2010

I received a Dior Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm for Christmas from my friend Chelsey as part of the Mallvibes Secret Santa event. I’ve been wanting this for a long time so it was perfect for me. Thanks Chels!
What it claims to do (from Dior.com):
A made-to-measure lip balm that beautifies and durably enhances the lips’ natural color. A customized color result: thanks to its Color Reviver technology, Dior Addict Lip Glow reacts directly with the unique chemistry chemistry of each woman’s lips before releasing its color ingredient. Lips seem revived from within, amazingly fresh, full and radiant. In addition, its SPF10 formula enriched with wild mango luffa cylindrica continuously protects and moisturizes. A universal balm for all lips.

(My lips after applying Lip Glow)

So basically this is a balm that, after application, gives that “my lips but better” effect. It is very emollient, almost greasy when applied, which can be good especially when you are going to be out in the cold, which in my case I will be. I had originally wanted this to be more of a balm than gloss, but after a few days of using it, it felt more like a moisturizing gloss than a balm. The moisture doesn’t last very long on the lips and you need to continuously apply it.

It does give off a pretty colour though; in my case it is a pretty pinkish-mauve colour. You can generally apply a layer of gloss directly on it and the colour payoff is not bad. Last night I used it with Jill Stuart Lip Lustre in 26 Cute Petal.

Overall, I do like this product, but I probably wouldn’t repurchase it because its not exactly what I had in mind. Plus its price tag ($35CAD) is not exactly affordable either.

My score? (Lost 2 hearts because it wasn’t what I had in mind, the moisture didn’t really stick around that long, and the crazy inflated price) ❤ ❤ ❤

On another note, my order from ASOS arrived today! I ordered a pair of flats (£9!) and a Paul & Joe Protective Foundation Primer UV (£15.25ish I think). Shipping is SO fast here, I just ordered this on Sunday, it shipped out yesterday and I got it today, and it was standard shipping too! Royal Mail is so much better than Canada Post, lol =D

Question of the Day: What do you look for in a Lip Balm?

Posted by Sheila on September 19, 2009

Lip Balm is very important to me. I have the tendency to lick my lips during the day to keep, which I *know* is very bad for my lips because it makes them even drier. So to compensate for it, I need a very hydrating lip balm formula at night.

I need a lip balm that:

  • does not contain any petroleum or petrolatum, because it clogs pores and prevents other “good” ingredients from absorbing into the skin;
  • will not leave a waxy film on my lips in the morning, because that is not only gross and uncomfortable feeling, it means that whatever it was, it didn’t absorb into my skin;
  • does not have methol, because it will slowly burn your lips;
  • does not have, or only minimally has, artificial fragrances and/or colourings

I’ve tried many many brands of lip balm, including the original Chapstick, Body Shop Lip Butter, and of course, other drugstore brands. I’ve never really found the one that I was looking for, particularly one that did not contain petroleum. Since they were drugstore brands, they used petroleum mainly as a filler. Of course petroleum offers temporarily relief of dry skin which is often why people assume its moisturizing when all that its doing is clogging your pores.

And then I went on to try more “scientific” stuff, like Vichy. It was my favourite lip balm for a while, but it still left that waxy feel on my lips in the morning.

That’s when I discovered Burt’s Bees (I know, I’m 100 years late…). The one I tried out was its Replenishing formula with pomegranate oil. This one, according to the box, is 99.60% natural. The ingredients listed also did not include any petroleum (!!!) so I, of course, bought it right away.

I can now understand what the hype about Burt’s Bees products are. This lip balm is absolute heaven. It really moisturizes my lips, now my lips feel smooth and supple and there is no waxy residue left in the morning. As an added plus, it smells awesome and in any case that you get it in your mouth, it also tastes great. From now on, I’ve ditched my $15 Vichy lip balm and go to this $5.99 one.

My question to you: What do you look for in a lip balm?
