Review: Shiseido Aqualabel Moist Cleansing Oil

Posted by Sheila on November 24, 2011

Shiseido Aqualabel Moist Cleansing Oil is one of my favourite cleansing oils. The formula is thick and luxurious and removes makeup well without leaving behind residue. I’m on my 2nd bottle and also bought 2 more backups. Sadly Aqualabel is only available in Asia, in countries such as China (including Hong Kong, I believe), Japan and Singapore.

The damage: Around $15-20 per bottle for 150mL.

The good: This cleansing oil is very thick compared to other cleansing oils I’ve used in the past and because it is so thick, you don’t need a lot to spread around your skin. It removes makeup well and emulsifies completely without leaving behind residue. It smells great, like a faint floral scent.

  • Thick and luxurious
  • Cleans well
  • Emulsifies completely
  • Smells great

The bad: Nothing really, except that it is kind of hard to find here. I buy mine from China =)

  • Hard to find

Overall: One of my favourite cleansing oils, it is inexpensive but feels expensive on the skin. I highly recommend this cleansing oil if you can find it. It is super easy to use and smells great!

  • Product: 17/20
  • Value: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Overall: 29/35 | A-
  • Repurchase? Yup! Already bought two backups =)

All-nighters & ultra simple fresh-faced FOTD

Posted by Sheila on November 18, 2009

I had another all-nighter on Monday night/Tuesday morning while working on my business law assignment. I finished early in the morning and had time to kill so I decided to put on some makeup, also partly because my skin looked so horrible and sallow after another night of no sleep. You can see the crazy sallow face here:

This was my face after I gave it a quick, deep cleanse with some cleansing oil and Clinique Liquid Facial Soap. Its not as scary as before and there is some warmth back into my skin after washing it with nice warm water.

You can see that makeup makes a world of a difference.
Products I used
Face
Eyes
Its a very simple FOTD that you can do in probably 5 minutes flat. I love how the Graphic Lights palette is already pretty blendable, although some colours can get quite chalky.

I’m not wearing any falsies, so you can see that without them, I have almost no lashes XD. Also you can see that the Jill Stuart powder foundation has almost no coverage, as it doesn’t even cover up my freckles… *sigh*

This is before my lashes got combed out, haha. Oopsies.
Let’s end off with a funny face.
I realized today that I constantly have low blood sugar. How do I know that? I tend to feel ultra tired after a while with no eating. And I’m not just making up a reason for my pigging out… lol. I’ve noticed this pattern for a while now, especially when I’m in Kingston and I sleep for a bit longer than I usually sleep. Maybe its because I’m not eating a balanced diet or something, because it never happens when I’m at home and living with mom.
Anyways, what do you think about this look? And don’t forget to follow me to get updates about the one-year anniversary contest that I will have coming up! More full-size products have been added to the prizes.

Byebye Summer, and welcome to the Season for Snow White

Posted by Sheila on November 6, 2009

Summer of 2009 is officially over (or has been over for a couple of weeks now). For your skin, this means its time to hydrate and protect itself from the bitter weather, and to repair itself from sun damage and excess buildup of melanoma (pigments in the skin). This winter, I will be doing a series of entries that focus on taking better care of your skin and preventing future damage. I call this:

“Snow White” has two meanings for me personally, one is that it is very cold outside but sometimes it can get quite warm inside, which means you need to adapt your skin to being able to withstand those extreme temperatures. The other is that with the abundance of sunlight in the summer, your skin will likely become tanned, which is why in the winter, for me at least, you need to 1) repair any sun damage, and 2) go back to having milky white skin.

Skin whitening, or skin brightening is a huge part of my skincare regime. There is a lot of controversy surrounding skin brightening in general, which I am not going to talk too much about. The main reason skin whitening is so important to me is that I want to have smooth, even, milky skin that has bits of pink especially in the cheek area. A good example of this kind of skin is Cyndi Wang, who is a Taiwanese singer and actress. This is my ultimate goal. With skin like this, who needs makeup?

However, which skin whitening, the main issue is hydration and moisture. Skin whitening is basically using chemicals such as glycolic acid, or other whitening ingredients such as Arbutin, to slowly peel off the upper layers of the skin. It is like constant exfoliation but just works faster and is a little bit stronger (although there is less iritation depending on what you use). Because there is that constant peeling of the upper skin layer, your skin will easily become sensitive and dehydrated, especially in the winter months. Therefore there is a need to regularly use products such as hydrating serums or moisturizing creams.

Currently, I am not going to lie, I have crappy skin. The reason is that I am in school, which means I sleep at 4-5 AM every day and wake up around 11. Also, once every two weeks or so, I don’t sleep at all for an entire night. And then I eat on average one meal, max 2 meals a day. So… you can see why my skin is crappy.

But you should not follow my example! In the summer (April – August) when I have a pretty set work schedule (8:30-4:30), I go to bed relatively early and wake up early, I eat 3 meals a day and I get my full 8 hours of sleep (normally). In the summer, that is when I repair my skin of all of the school damage such as acne, acne scars, fine lines, discolouration, etc. But now that I am in school, I can focus only on preventing those things from sprouting, which currently is quite effective.

My current night-time skincare regime:

  1. Wash off day-cream with Shu Uemura oil cleanser
  2. Cleanse with Clinique Liquid Facial Soap every other day, and MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator on the days I don’t use Clinique
  3. Use MAC Volcanic Ash Thermal Mask once every 3-4 days which I am in the shower
  4. Tone with Kose Meddicated Sekkisei or Biotherm Biosource Clarifying Lotion
  5. Depending on how my skin feels that day, I use Biotherm Aquasource Superserum (if I need more hydration), Diorsnow White Reveal Essence (skin feels normal), Dior Capture Totale Night Time Soft Peal (skin feels normal). I usually rotate between the three in a white, Dior Capture Totale is used 1-2 a week, Biotherm Aquasource is used 1-2 times a week (at night) and Diorsnow is used the rest of the time
  6. Hydrate my skin with H2O+ Face Oasis
  7. Apply lip balm, usually Vichy Nutrilogie Lips or Burt’s Bees

My currently day-time regime is really simple:

  1. Wash face with water; yes just water. When you sleep your body goes through damage control and your skin will secrete its own protective oils. This is quite precious and good for repairing your skin, so I don’t want to strip it off using a harsh cleanser.
  2. Depending on the weather outside, I may or may not use Biotherm Aquasource Superserum. I don’t want to overhydrate my skin because that will cause congestion and breakouts as well.
  3. Moisturize with Biotherm Age Fitness Lotion SPF 15. This is the preventative day care part, not only does it have sunscreen in it, it prevents and repairs the first signs of aging, including big pores!

This regime has done a good job at preventing more damage, but at the same time I have really noticed that my skin a lot brighter and smoother, probably due to the Diorsnow White Reveal Essence. Funny thing is that my face is actually brighter than the rest of my body, which is why lately I have been vigorously exfoliating and applying brightening body lotion.

Overall, you should be really paying close attention to your skin. This is why I have so many depending ons in the lists above because I apply products to suit my skin’s needs. You should also not follow my bad example; get a proper night’s sleep, drink lots of fluids, and eat all of your meals, and if possible, exercise regularly. A normal lifestyle will help you trememdously with the skin that you so desperately want.

I will be doing a reviews of the products mentioned above in the upcoming weeks.

Review: Anna Sui Oil Cleanser vs. Shu Uemura High Performance Cleansing Oil

Posted by Sheila on September 16, 2009

I am a huge believer in cleansing oils. I believe that with the combination of oils in the bottle, the right method of massaging the oil into your skin, and the right amount of water, cleansing oils are the BEST makeup removers out there. Additionally, it will not only remove your makeup, it will also draw out the impurities in your skin and leave it cleaner than ever.

Now, the question is, why would anyone with the right mind put OIL on their face??

Well, I have combination dry skin, meaning I have an oilier t-zone with dehydrated cheeks and my t-zone gets pretty oily during the day. Cleansing oil still works wonders on my face without making it any oilier, nor stripping my face of any of my natural oils. The magic lies in the added ingredients in the bottle. One of these magic ingredients is an emulsifier that will turn the oil into a light milk upon contact with water. The percentage of emulsifier to oil in the bottle determines out fast that oil turns into milk, making it either easier, or harder, to wash off. Once it does wash off, your skin is supposed to be free of makeup, dirt and grime from your day. That is why choosing the right cleansing oil is very important as not all oils have the same ingredients and not all oils will work well with your skin.

To use cleansing oil (any kind of cleansing oil will work):

  1. Start with completely dry hands and a dry face. Dispense a one to three pumps (depending on the amount of makeup you have on now, more makeup = more oil) of cleansing oil into your palm.
  2. Quickly, massage your entire face with the oil, concentrating on areas where you have more colour, such as your eyes, lips and cheeks. Massage for one to two minutes.
  3. Take a little bit of water (do NOT rinse off yet), and massage your face. While the oil emulsifies, it will feel ligher and turn into a more opaque white colour. Keep massaging for another minute or two.
  4. Wash it off with lukewarm water, which will help open your pores and wash off the gunk cleared out of them by the oil.
  5. Depending on your cleansing oil and skin type, you may need to wash your face again with regular face cleanser.

Today, I will be reviewing two cleansing oils that I love using. Both of them have their pros and cons and both of them work relatively well compared to others that I have used.

The two that I will be reviewing are the Anna Sui Oil Cleanser, and the Shu Uemura High Performance Cleansing Oil (Advanced Formula).

(Anna Sui Oil Cleanser)
(Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil)
I will be reviewing them based on four criteria: cleansing power (the ability to remove makeup and other junk off your face); aesthetics (feel, look and smell); emulsifying power (the ability to emulsify completely and not leave an oily feeling on your face); and price.
Cleansing Power
Anna Sui: The Anna Sui Oil Cleanser removes makeup moderately well, meaning more massaging is required, especially for thicker makeup (ie. for special events). You would also require to pump it a few more times if you have more makeup on because it is a thicker oil, thus harder to massage. For daily use, I pump it once for it to be able to cover my whole face. For times when I have more makeup, I usually need to pump it two to three times.
Shu Uemura: The Shu Uemura High Performance Cleansing Oil removes makeup very well. You don’t need to massage it too much for it to be able to strip everything off. You also don’t need to pump it too many times because it is thinner oil and much easier to massage.
Aesthetics
Anna Sui: Typical of Anna Sui’s products, the Oil Cleanser bottle is very cute and pretty to look at. It is also smaller, making it easier to move around and transport from place to place. The smell, again typical of Anna Sui, is of roses. Its great when you are massaging it into your skin because its like aromatherapy. The oil, though, is a much thicker oil which creates a problem because it is harder to massage and you will need more of it to cover your whole face.
Shu Uemura: Typical of Shu Uemura, the packaging is simple and straightforward and not too fancy. You can get it in two sizes: 150 mL and 450 mL, which is good if you’ve already used the product and want to buy it in “bulk” for everyday use. The smell, however, is similar to canola oil. This is great if you’re sensitive to fragrances, but not good if you’re looking for something that smells good (this is only for this type though, Shu Uemura’s other cleansing oils each have their own distinct smell). The oil is much thinner and so you don’t need too much in order to cover your whole face.
Emulsifying Power
Anna Sui: Anna Sui’s cleansing oil takes a bit of water to emulsify, mainly because it is thicker than Shu Uemura’s. Also, it tends to leave a little bit of a greasy feeling behind, which I take off by washing it again with Clinique’s Liquid Facial Soap.
Shu Uemura: Shu Uemura’s cleansing oil emulsifies very conveniently with just a little bit of water, which is very good because it leaves no greasy feeling behind. With this cleansing oil, you do not need to wash your face again with another cleanser because it already feels refreshing.
Price
Anna Sui: Priced at $29CAD for 150 mL, making it 19.33 cents per mL.
Shu Uemura: Priced at $80CAD for 450 mL, making it 17.78 cents per mL.
Overall, I would prefer Shu Uemura’s High Performance Cleansing Oil over the Anna Sui Oil Cleanser. I feel that it has higher cleaning power, and is easier to use. Even though Anna Sui’s is more aesthetically pleasing and smells better, which I always appreciate, it does not clean as well.
Now my question to you is, what type of makeup remover do you prefer?
